RARE BREEDS TRUST OF AUSTRALIA
powered by TidyHQCattle : SARDO NEGRO
Cattle : SARDO NEGRO
Country of Origin : Mexico
Australian Status: CRITICAL
International status: About 41,000 in Mexico and South America. Several thousand in the USA.
Arrived in Australia: 2000's.
Australian Population: Available here as straws 2020 (and probably earlier). Presume F2's in 2022.
History: Developed in Mexico from Gir cattle.
Breed traits: Beef and milk. Primarily bred for their hide colours, known as Agryado-Indubrazil, Mouro coat colour - black and white hair, with red or brown spots sometimes present. Originally approved by Mexico's Department of Agriculture as Gir in 1962, they soon became Sardo Negro rather than pure Gir. A little Indubrazil and Brahman genetics went into their genesis.
Beautiful Gir looks with long ears to cool the blood, and eyes protected from harsh sun by a heavy brow.
Organisation : None in Australia.
Straws imported by Rocky Repro, from the USA's Butler Farms CEBU; which in turn accesses quality genetics from South America.
Some to be found on the "Texas Longhorn Tours" property in Qld. The genetics sell well here so several F1's and perhaps F2 or even higher should be here now.
They have been registered as Brahmans according to a good source. It must be time an organisation was formed to foster this breed here, a breed free of Brahman genetics if an upgrade-free program was done.
